¿Y si pudiéramos aunar la música, el teatro del absurdo y el antiguo Egipto? Producir un encuentro entre Maya Deren, Sergei Parajanov y la tragedia griega. Immaterial Possession es un grupo que no tiene límites.
L: ¿Quiénes sois?
IP: Somos Immaterial Possession, de Athens, Georgia, una pequeña ciudad universitaria del sur. Athens tiene un algo especial porque durante mucho tiempo ha sido un hogar para bichos raros, artistas y músicos de todo tipo… aquí hay como una puerta giratoria de expresión creativa que se retroalimenta.
L: Vuestra línea estética me recuerda al teatro del absurdo, al cine de Maya Deren y David Lynch… ¿De dónde partís? ¿Cuáles son vuestras referencias o qué os inspira?
IP: Estéticamente, en lo que respecta a nuestras ideas de performance y vídeo, el punto de partida sería una mentalidad teatral e ilusoria. Nos dijimos, ¿qué podemos hacer para que el espectador se ría y se quede sin aliento? Nos encantan los mundos de títeres y manualidades, los espacios rituales, el mundo de los sueños, entrelazando el humor con el absurdo. A menudo trabajamos con dramas arquetípicos, antiguos e intuitivos, pero nos gusta mezclarlos un poco. Y estas son las cosas que nos inspiran. No tenemos mucho interés en expresar “realismo” en el sentido digital contemporáneo. Las inspiraciones provienen de cineastas como Kenneth Anger, Maya Deren…la belleza del trabajo de Sergei Parajanov, Kurosawa, Fellini, las primeras imágenes mudas…cualquier cosa donde la experimentación sea evidente.
L: El arte y la estética es un punto muy importante en vuestro grupo, ¿por qué?
IP: Todos somos músicos, pero también artistas de otras muchas disciplinas. ¡No vemos cómo separarlas…! A veces, al escribir una canción o tocar música juntos, las imágenes guían la música. Y viceversa, todo es lo mismo.
L: ¿De dónde surge vuestra estética?
IP: Uff … ¡de todas partes! De la antigüedad de Grecia, Roma, Egipto…de decrépitas casas góticas del sur, de trajes de teatro masónicos. Hace poco hemos adquirido vestidos y túnicas de teatro masónicos en tiendas de antigüedades para hacer algunos de nuestros vídeos.
L: ¿Qué pretendéis expresar con vuestra música?
IP: Nosotros buscamos expresar una exploración a través del viaje visual e invitar a la danza y al movimiento bajo la alegre oscuridad.
L: ¿Quiénes sois en la música? ¿Quiénes queréis ser?
IP: Actualmente, ¡estamos en constante cambio! Y quienes queremos ser es nosotros mismos, pero con más vídeos y grabaciones. Y soñamos con volver a tocar en vivo en un futuro seguro, en casa y en el extranjero.

What if we can bring together music, the theater of the absurd and ancient Egypt? Produce an encounter between Maya Deren, Sergei Parajanov and Greek tragedy. Immaterial Possession is a group that has no limits.
L: Who are you?
IP: We are Immaterial Possession, from Athens, Georgia- a small southern college town. Athens has a special quality because it’s long been a home for weirdos, artists, and musicians of all kinds.. there is a revolving door of creative expression here.
L: Your aesthetic line reminds me of the Theater of the Absurd, the cinema of Maya Deren and David Lynch, etc…Where do you start from? What are your references or what inspires you?
IP: Aesthetically, as far as our performance and video ideas go, we sorta start with an illusionary, theatrical mindset- what can we put together that will make the viewer both giggle and gasp? We love puppetry and hand-crafting worlds, ritual spaces, dream narratives, entwining the humor in absurdity. We often work off intuitive, ancient, archetypal dramas but like to stir them up a bit. And so these are things that inspire. We all share a love for time-lessness. We don’t have much interest to express ‘realism’ in the contemporary digital sense. The craft of film and theater evokes a kind of intimacy, so we don’t try to hide it much. Inspirations come from film makers such as Kenneth Anger, Maya Deren.. Sergei Parajanov’s work is so beautiful, Kurosawa, Fellini, early silent pictures.. anything where the experimentation is evident.
L: Art and asthetics is an important thing in your group, why?
IP: We are all musicians, but also artists of many mixed mediums… we don’t see how to separate the two..! Sometimes in writing a song, or jamming on music together, the imagery guides the music. And vise versa- all is the one in the same.
L:Where do your aesthetics come from?
IP: Oof… just about everywhere! Ancient realms of Greece, Rome, Egypt.. old decrepit beautiful southern gothic houses, apparently masonic theater costumes (we have recently been acquiring all these handmade masonic theater gowns and robes from country antique shops).. in general- all things hand crafted!
L: What do you want to express with your music?
IP: We pull to express a sense of exploration and visual journeying. And to invite dance and movement under the light-hearted darkness.
L: Who are you in music? Who do you want to be?
IP: Currently, we are ever-changing! And who we want to be is ourselves, but with more videos and recordings. and we dream of playing live again in a safe future, at home and oversea.
