EL NÚCLEO

Visitamos la residencia de artistas de la Fundación "El Núcleo" con motivo de su Vernissage.

Cuando la inspiración llega, el artista saca su pequeña libreta y realiza bocetos y anotaciones, capturando esa musa que en muchas ocasiones aparece sin avisar —a veces en mitad de la calle— y desaparece del mismo modo en que vino. Después, toca esperar el momento y el lugar adecuados para poder darle vida y compartirla para el disfrute de todos. No siempre es fácil encontrar esas condiciones necesarias en las que el artista puede centrar toda su atención en el proceso creativo sin distracciones. La confianza y la determinación son cualidades esenciales para desarrollar las oportunidades que los artistas necesitan. Dos conceptos abstractos que no se pueden ver ni tocar, solo sentir. De esas cualidades humanas nace la Fundación SZ, un lugar donde se materializan estos valores. Es una organización sin ánimo de lucro, constituida en octubre de 2018 por Sara Zaldívar y Fernando Sarasola. Sus fines son el fomento de la cultura, la creación artística y la investigación en el campo de las bellas artes. Sara Zaldívar cuenta con una extensa trayectoria profesional en el mundo del arte contemporáneo. En 2012 fundó Huntress of Art, dedicada a la asesoría de clientes privados y corporativos, la representación de obras, la adquisición, conservación y revalorización de colecciones, entre otros servicios. En El Núcleo, además, se tiende una generosa mano ofreciendo orientación a los artistas invitados, generando encuentros con coleccionistas, galeristas y comisarios, y facilitando visibilidad a su trabajo.

El pasado 11 de octubre tuvo lugar el Vernissage en El Núcleo, un encuentro en el que todos los artistas invitados en 2025 expusieron sus creaciones. A las 13:00 se realizó un recorrido por los distintos espacios donde se encontraban sus obras. Cada artista tuvo la oportunidad de explicar -en grupos reducidos- todo el proceso, y el resultado final de su estancia allí. Más tarde, hubo un encuentro informal (con comida mediante) donde artistas, coleccionistas y agentes del arte conversaron e intercambiaron ideas. A finales de septiembre concluyó el plazo de presentación de solicitudes para participar en 2026 en El Núcleo. Se espera que, a lo largo del mes de octubre, se dé a conocer la lista de las personas que tendrán la oportunidad de formar parte de este espacio el próximo año.

La residencia se encuentra ubicada en la Yeguada El Espinar (Segovia), reserva de la Biosfera. Un espacio de cien hectáreas, suficientemente alejado de la capital para poder oír el susurro del viento entre sus árboles y sus zonas ajardinadas, además del llamado “ruido de paso” al caminar, que hacen los caballos que allí se encuentran. Un entorno natural silencioso que ofrece al artista, condiciones inmejorables, para realizar sus proyectos creativos además de dejarles una indudable impronta sobre su vivencia allí. El comité de expertos (galeristas, comisarios, coleccionistas) de “El Núcleo” elige anualmente de 2 a 4 artistas, para que en periodos de un mes puedan ser invitados a una estadía y formar parte del programa. De este modo, contribuirán con su visión y obra a enriquecer el panorama artístico español. Además, la fundación desarrolla otros proyectos dedicados a la enseñanza y a la investigación en el ámbito de las bellas artes.

Desde 2019 hasta la fecha, un total de catorce emprendedores culturales han disfrutado de esta experiencia en El Núcleo. En 2025 tuvieron su oportunidad Carla Cascales (Barcelona 1989), Alejandra Glez (La Habana 1996), Juan Díaz-Faes (Oviedo 1982) y Ángel Sevillano (Madrid 1998). Todo un elenco de creadores.

“Un año antes de asistir a la residencia fui a visitarla, coincidiendo con Jaime Urdiales y Jaime Ruíz. Me llamó la atención ese sonido constante que había del galopar de los caballos. Yo provengo de Barcelona, el mar Mediterráneo es una fuente de inspiración en mi trabajo, al escuchar ese sonido me recordaba al mar, un sonido de horizonte, repetitivo, se integra porque te acostumbras. Me gustó el paralelismo entre el galopar de los caballos y el de las olas del mar. Quería hacer una pieza que tuviera que ver son eso. Los caballos galopaban en sentido circular, así que hice una obra que lo representaba. Los caballos cabalgan sobre arena, sobre ello hice un molde circular y vertí un metal, en este caso aluminio, utilizado también en las herraduras del caballo. Las uní con un elemento que pertenecía a estos animales, riendas antiguas de cuero que aún conservaban su forma. Compartí mi estancia con la fotógrafa Alejandra Glez, salíamos a pasear, ver el amanecer, el atardecer, nos unimos un montón. Les estoy muy agradecida a Sara por esta oportunidad y a Alejandra por esta experiencia juntas”, nos cuenta Carla Cascales.

Son agua y fuego, viento y tierra en el cuerpo de dos mujeres. Compartieron estancia en El Núcleo en 2025 y de ahí se forjó una bonita amistad. Carla Cascales ha expuesto en galerías y espacios de arte emergente, tal como la exposición «Como un Manantial» en la galería Senda (Barcelona) dentro del festival Art Nou. Obtuvo la beca de residencia artística Varda Artist Residency, en San Francisco (USA) y trabaja con galerías internacionales como Tappan Collective en Los Ángeles, entre otras. Alejandra Glez ha sido ganadora del IV Premio Fundación ENAIRE Young Photography Award, exhibiendo en ARCO Madrid 2022 a través de dicha fundación. Ha participado en numerosas exposiciones personales y colectivas en Cuba, España y otros países de América y Europa, entre otros proyectos. Durante el tiempo de creación en El Núcleo, ambas sintieron la poderosa presencia de los caballos y como esto dejaba huella de herradura en ellas y en su obra.

“Mi estancia en El Núcleo me puso la verdad delante, llevaba mucho tiempo con el tema de la espiritualidad relacionada con el agua, allí había también un estanque, pero realmente fueron los caballos quienes me conectaron con algo dentro muy profundo. Son seres espirituales, mi unión con ellos fue muy fuerte. Así que mi trabajo allí giro en torno a ellos. Les representé con fotos, mi pelo, su crin, pelo artificial, y todo esto comunicaba mi creencia en esa conexión, unirlo como un cordón umbilical. Descubrí que la silla del caballo, vista al revés, tenía la forma de un útero femenino, lo que viene siendo la vida y la conexión de las mujeres. Carla Cascales para mí, más que una amiga representa una artista a la que admiro mucho y es para mí un espacio de paz, una zona de confort, con ella siento tranquilidad, su dulzura me llena el alma, me ayudó a bajar revoluciones. Con ella entendía ese movimiento continuo, pero ella lo vive de otra manera tan dulce. Sara Zaldívar ha conseguido algo muy único que es hacerte sentir en casa en un espacio donde la gente tiene la posibilidad de crear, hacerlo como tú quieras, sentirte libre y eso es increíble. Allí solo teníamos que trabajar en lo que nosotras quisiéramos, no había nadie que nos mandara o exigiera, era tanta la paz de ese espacio y todo eso una siente que viene de la mano de Sara, de cómo es ella en su día a día, con sus amistades, con los artistas que la rodeamos y me gustó mucho sentir esa esencia”, expresa Alejandra Glez.

Juan Díaz-Faes, usa un lenguaje visual en sus creaciones de carácter desenfadado. Sus simpáticas caras miran como él, sonriente y de frente, restando tal vez, esa seriedad que puede volver opaca la vida. “Faes to Faes”, es un juego de palabras que utilizó para su Exposición en 2023 en Cerquone Gallery Caracas, Venezuela. Su trabajo ha sido expuesto a nivel nacional y en importantes galerías internaciones en París y Seúl, entre otros.

“Intento elegir las residencias si tienen algo especial que me interese, porque yo vivo en un pueblo donde tengo el espacio para trabajar. Así que me interesaba El Núcleo más como una experiencia, aunque el entorno natural era increíble. Allí tuve la oportunidad de estar 24 horas al día en el trabajo, sin distracciones que pueden romper el flujo de trabajo. Tenía ganas de centrarme 100% y es lo que hice, me levantaba a las 7.00 y estaba casi todo el día en mis creaciones. Hice muchos ejercicios de trabajo, trabajé mucho el papel y trabajos pictóricos, creo que hice un total de 75 piezas en el tiempo que estuve allí. La relación con la naturaleza y los caballos me hizo sentir como en casa. El resumen es una experiencia muy positiva”, cuenta Juan Díaz-Faes.

Ángel Sevillano reivindica en cada obra que el arte no es indiferente ni meramente decorativo. Observa lo cotidiano, lo transforma y se muestra a sí mismo en cada trazo, materializando el estado que aquello externo le provoca en su interior. Todo ello lo realiza a través de originales soportes, como el metacrilato intervenido. Ha participado en numerosas exposiciones colectivas y festivales, tanto en España como en el extranjero.

“El entorno influye mucho en esta residencia, en mi caso, pasé de vivir en el centro de Madrid, de tener que hacer 45 minutos de metro rodeado de gente a estar solo en el campo con caballos y llegar en 2 minutos de la cama al estudio. Al principio no esperaba esa dificultad con la soledad. Rápidamente me acostumbré y vi muchas cosas positivas. Entendí cuánto tiempo en Madrid se me iba en muchas cosas, cuánto tiempo perdía en mi estudio divagando. En El Núcleo mi sensación fue que casi todo se movía a pintar, a pintar mucho. En ese mes me dio la sensación de que pasó mucho más tiempo que un mes, mucho tiempo de pensar, de trabajar de manera intensa hicieron que avanzase muchas cuestiones, abriese caminos cerrase etapas. Salir de ese encierro deseado y encontrarte en medio del campo verde con caballos pastando y corriendo, era un gran regalo. Me gustaba mucho pasear al atardecer con la ropa manchada e ir a ver a algún caballo. El entorno es precioso, caballos, campo, perros que te acompañan a dar una vuelta, un clima increíble también. Durante esa residencia creo que pinté unos nueve cuadros, fue una producción muy interesante. Había guardado varios proyectos para ese mes y me pareció sorprendente terminarlo todo. Tengo la certeza de que ese mes ha dejado muchas cosas positivas en mi trabajo y en mí como persona”, relata Ángel Sevillano.

El Núcleo no solo es un espacio de trabajo: esta residencia invita a la reflexión artística. Un lugar donde los creadores pueden absorber la esencia del entorno: silencio, confianza y determinación.

EL NÚCLEO: VERNISSAGE 2025 ART & LUNCH

When inspiration strikes, the artist takes out their little notebook and makes sketches and notes, capturing that muse that often appears without warning — sometimes in the middle of the street — and disappears just as suddenly as it came. Then it is time to wait for the right moment and place to bring it to life and share it for everyone to enjoy. It is not always easy to find the necessary conditions in which the artist can focus all their attention on the creative process without distractions. Confidence and determination are essential qualities for developing the opportunities that artists need. Two abstract concepts that cannot be seen or touched, only felt. The SZ Foundation was born out of these human qualities, a place where these values are brought to life. It is a non-profit organisation, established in October 2018 by Sara Zaldívar and Fernando Sarasola. Its aims are to promote culture, artistic creation and research in the field of fine arts. Sara Zaldívar has extensive professional experience in the world of contemporary art.

In 2012, she founded Huntress of Art, dedicated to advising private and corporate clients, representing works, acquiring, conserving and revaluing collections, among other services. El Núcleo also offers generous guidance to guest artists, arranging meetings with collectors, gallery owners and curators, and facilitating visibility for their work.

On 11 October, El Núcleo hosted the Vernissage, an event at which all the artists invited in 2025 exhibited their creations. At 1 p.m., there was a tour of the different spaces where their works were displayed. Each artist had the opportunity, in small groups of about ten people, to explain the entire process and the final result of their stay there. At 2:00 p.m., a buffet lunch was offered, where artists, collectors, and art agents conversed and exchanged ideas. The deadline for submitting applications to participate in El Núcleo in 2026 was at the end of September. The list of people who will have the opportunity to be part of this space next year is expected to be announced throughout the month of October.

The residence is located in Yeguada El Espinar (Segovia), a Biosphere Reserve. A hundred-hectare space, far enough from the capital to hear the whisper of the wind among its trees and gardens, as well as the sound of horses walking around. A quiet natural environment that offers artists unbeatable conditions for carrying out their creative projects, as well as leaving an indelible mark on their experience there. The committee of experts (gallery owners, curators, collectors) from ‘El Núcleo’ selects 2 to 4 artists each year to be invited to stay for a month and take part in the programme. In this way, they contribute their vision and work to enrich the Spanish art scene. In addition, the foundation develops other projects dedicated to teaching and research in the field of fine arts.

From 2019 to date, a total of fourteen cultural entrepreneurs have enjoyed this experience at El Núcleo. In 2025, Carla Cascales (Barcelona, 1989), Alejandra Glez (Havana, 1996), Juan Díaz-Faes (Oviedo, 1982) and Ángel Sevillano (Madrid, 1998) had their opportunity. A whole cast of creators.

“A year before attending the residency, I went to visit it, coinciding with Jaime Urdiales and Jaime Ruíz. I was struck by the constant sound of galloping horses. I come from Barcelona, and the Mediterranean Sea is a source of inspiration in my work. Hearing that sound reminded me of the sea, a repetitive sound that becomes part of you because you get used to it. I liked the parallel between the galloping of the horses and the waves of the sea. I wanted to make a piece that had to do with that. The horses galloped in a circle, so I made a work that represented that. Horses ride on sand, so I made a circular mould and poured metal, in this case aluminium, which is also used in horseshoes. I joined them with an element that belonged to these animals, old leather reins that still retained their shape. I shared my stay with the photographer Alejandra Glez. We went out for walks, watched the sunrise and sunset, and bonded a lot. I am very grateful to Sara for this opportunity and to Alejandra for this experience together,” says Carla Cascales.

They are water and fire, wind and earth in the bodies of two women. They shared a stay at El Núcleo in 2025, where a beautiful friendship was forged. Carla Cascales has exhibited in galleries and emerging art spaces, such as the exhibition ‘Como un Manantial’ (Like a Spring) at the Senda Gallery (Barcelona) as part of the Art Nou festival. She was awarded the Varda Artist Residency scholarship in San Francisco (USA) and works with international galleries such as Tappan Collective in Los Angeles, among others. Alejandra Glez won the IV Fundación ENAIRE Young Photography Award, exhibiting at ARCO Madrid 2022 through the foundation. She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Cuba, Spain and other countries in America and Europe, among other projects. During their time creating at El Núcleo, both artists felt the powerful presence of horses and how this left a horseshoe mark on them and their work.

“My stay at El Núcleo revealed the truth to me. I had been exploring spirituality related to water for a long time, and there was also a pond there, but it was really the horses that connected me to something very deep inside. They are spiritual beings, and my bond with them was very strong. So my work there revolved around them. I represented them with photos, my hair, their manes, artificial hair, and all of this communicated my belief in that connection, uniting it like an umbilical cord. I discovered that the horse’s saddle, seen upside down, had the shape of a female uterus, which represents life and the connection between women. Carla Cascales, for me, more than a friend, represents an artist whom I admire greatly and is a space of peace for me, a comfort zone. With her, I feel tranquillity, her sweetness fills my soul, she helped me to slow down. With her, I understood that continuous movement, but she experiences it in such a sweet way. Sara Zaldívar has achieved something very unique, which is to make you feel at home in a space where people have the possibility to create, to do it the way you want, to feel free, and that is incredible. There, we only had to work on what we wanted to do. There was no one to boss us around or make demands. There was so much peace in that space, and you could feel that it came from Sara, from how she is in her day-to-day life, with her friends, with the artists who surround her. I really liked feeling that essence,” says Alejandra Glez.

Juan Díaz-Faes uses visual language in his light-hearted creations. His friendly faces look like him, smiling and facing forward, perhaps removing that seriousness that can make life dull. ‘Faes to Faes’ is a play on words he used for his 2023 exhibition at the Cerquone Gallery in Caracas, Venezuela. His work has been exhibited nationally and in major international galleries in Paris and Seoul, among others.

“I try to choose residencies if they have something special that interests me, because I live in a village where I have the space to work. So I was interested in El Núcleo more as an experience, although the natural environment was incredible. There I had the opportunity to be at work 24 hours a day, without distractions that can break the flow of work. I wanted to focus 100% and that’s what I did, I got up at 7:00 a.m. and spent almost the entire day on my creations. I did a lot of work exercises, I worked a lot on paper and pictorial works, I think I did a total of 75 pieces during my time there. The relationship with nature and the horses made me feel at home. All in all, it was a very positive experience”, says Juan Díaz-Faes.

Ángel Sevillano asserts in each work that art is neither indifferent nor merely decorative. He observes everyday life, transforms it and reveals himself in each stroke, materialising the state that the external world provokes within him. He does all this using original media, such as modified methacrylate. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions and festivals, both in Spain and abroad.

“The environment has a significant influence on this residence. In my case, I went from living in the centre of Madrid, having to travel 45 minutes on the underground surrounded by people, to being alone in the countryside with horses and arriving at my studio in two minutes from my bed. At first, I didn’t expect to find solitude so difficult. I quickly got used to it and saw many positive things. I realised how much time I wasted in Madrid on many things, how much time I wasted in my studio daydreaming. At El Núcleo, I felt that almost everything was geared towards painting, painting a lot. During that month, I felt like much more time had passed than just a month. A lot of time thinking and working intensely allowed me to make progress on many issues, open up new paths and close chapters. Leaving that desired confinement and finding yourself in the middle of the green countryside with horses grazing and running was a great gift. I really enjoyed walking at sunset with my stained clothes and going to see the horses. The surroundings are beautiful, horses, countryside, dogs that accompany you on your walks, and incredible weather too. During that residency, I think I painted about nine pictures, which was a very interesting output. I had saved several projects for that month and I was surprised to finish them all. I am certain that that month has left many positive things in my work and in me as a person,” says Ángel Sevillano.

The Núcleo is not just a workspace: this residence invites artistic reflection. A place where creators can absorb the essence of the environment: silence, confidence and determination.
